iCAN SHINE SWIM CAMP

iCan Shine Swim Camp

DSAA, iCan Shine and Lafayette Parks and Recreation hosted a week long swim camp in April at the Robichaux Center's indoor pool.  With 15 swimmers (ages 3 - adult) and 25 volunteers, the camp was a huge success!  Volunteers told us that the experience changed them for the better. Parents expressed the joy of seeing their children swim and spectators shared that they had to see the progress the swimmers made to believe it. It was such a rewarding and awesome feeling to be a part of a program that gives a new, life-long skill to individuals who may have thought they would never swim.  Parents, swimmers, and volunteers made this program work! We appreciate the staff of iCan Shine for their patience and expertise in working with our special families.  Our volunteers went above and beyond to insure our swimmers were comfortable and successful.  Two local volunteers became certified Adaptive Aquatics Instructors during the camp and will offer swim lessons in our community for those individuals with disabilities.  Thanks to everyone who made the camp one to remember!
